  • Put the hook through the second chain stitch from the needle. (That is, skip one chain stitch.)
  • Draw a loop through the chain stitch, and wrap the yarn over the hook, and
  • Pull a loop through the two loops on the needle.
  • Keep on working in this way until you have made a row of single crochet stitches.

Alternate instructions

Insert the hook under the two threads that make up the stitch you are connecting to. Yarn over once the needle is through, wind the cotton round the needle again, and draw it through the two loops on the needle.
